After spending four years in a mental institution, a former teacher (Cooper)moves back in with his mother and tries to reconcile with his ex-wife. Robert DeNiro plays the young man's father who tires to be patient but can't keep from letting his frustration give voice to constant wisecracks. Jennifer Lawrence plays a young woman with her own mental problems who falls in love with Cooper's character which in turn helps them both.
